Sending a man with a magnifying glass and tweezers through the whole pile is hardly the answer. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #393939;\">This is where X-ray technology comes in.  <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #393939;\">With technology that can illuminate materials and sort them by density or chemical composition, you don&#8217;t need a magnifying glass or tweezers &#8211; in fact, you don&#8217;t even have to lift a finger.  <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #393939; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-64542202 );\">Curious yet?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #393939; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-64542202 );\"> <\/span><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/span><br><span style=\"color: #393939;\">X-ray Transmission (XRT) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) may sound like something from a hospital ward, but they are actually key concepts in metal recycling, and they are the ones that make it possible to sort metals with almost surgical precision.  <\/span><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">But what does it mean and what&#8217;s the difference?<\/span><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">I&#8217;m so glad you asked!<\/span><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"> <\/span><\/p><h3 data-start=\"173\" data-end=\"238\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"177\" data-end=\"236\">XRT (X-ray radiography) &#8211; Looks at density\/density<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p data-start=\"239\" data-end=\"281\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">Imagine working in customs at an airport and having to examine two different packages without opening them.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"239\" data-end=\"281\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">You put two packages in an X-ray scanner:<\/span><\/p><ol data-start=\"283\" data-end=\"421\"><li data-start=\"283\" data-end=\"346\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">The first package contains a <strong data-start=\"317\" data-end=\"343\">heavy, compact lead brick<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"421\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">The second package contains a <strong data-start=\"380\" data-end=\"418\">lighter but larger aluminum block<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"481\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">When you look at the scan image, you can easily distinguish them:<\/span><\/p><ul data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"704\"><li data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"584\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><span data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"513\">The lead brick looks darker<\/span> because lead has a high density and absorbs more X-rays.<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"704\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><span data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"622\">The aluminum block looks brighter<\/span> because aluminum has a lower density and absorbs less X-ray radiation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"822\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"738\"> <\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"822\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"738\">XRT works in the same way<\/strong>: it assesses <strong data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"767\">density<\/strong> and can distinguish between metals with different densities.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"945\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\" data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"943\">So XRT can identify that one package contains a heavy metal (lead) and the other a light metal (aluminum).<\/span><\/p><h3> <\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1023\">XRF (X-ray fluorescence) &#8211; Analyzes the chemical composition<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1094\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">Now take the same two packages and examine them in a different way:<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1201\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">Instead of scanning them from the outside, <span data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"1198\">you open the packages and look at the &#8220;product declaration&#8221; of the material<\/span>.<\/span><\/p><ol data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1328\"><li data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1254\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">The first package contains <strong data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1251\">pure lead (Pb)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1328\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">The second package contains an <strong data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1325\">aluminum alloy (Al + Mg + Si)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1486\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">Although XRT already told you that there was a heavy and a light object, XRF now provides precise information about <span data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1483\">which elements are present<\/span>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1513\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1511\">Here&#8217;s the important thing:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1768\"><li data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1611\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">If both packages <strong data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1572\">had exactly the same density<\/strong>, XRT would not be able to tell the difference.<\/span><\/li><li data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1768\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">But XRF would still reveal the difference because it doesn&#8217;t look at weight or density &#8211; it analyzes <span data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1752\">the specific elements<\/span> in the material.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1912\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1802\"> <\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1912\"><span style=\"color: #393939; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-64542202 );\">XRF can confirm that one package is pure lead while the other is an aluminum alloy &#8211; even if they weighed the same.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"945\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"943\"> <\/strong><\/span><\/p><div><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\"><strong>What does this mean for your business?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><span style=\"color: #393939;\">In our experience, an X-ray sorting machine can often pay for itself after just <b>2-5 years <\/b>.<b> <\/b>in some cases faster. Of course, how fast depends on the value of the materials, the total volumes and how the system is implemented. This means that the investment not only pays for itself within a manageable timeframe, but also continues to generate value year after year.  <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #393939;\">With X-ray sorting, you get clean fractions that can be sold at higher prices while minimizing waste and manual errors.
